Biologist Marshall Mackey (Marshall McCue ) from University of Arkansas (University of Arkansas ) undertook a study of the biological mechanism that enables some snakes to starve for up to two years.
For that, he spent 168 days observed 62 individuals of three snake species (distant relatives): Royal Python, white snake and Texas gramatnica.
Macku followed physiological, compositional and morphological changes of the snakes and found that snakes can reduce their metabolic rate by 72%! For this they use a special survival strategy in the absence of food, is not peculiar to any of vertebrates.
The rate at 72% is shocking, as “snakes and so consume little energy, and we still didn’t know how they manage to reduce energy consumption to such a low level”, ” says Marshall.
What’s even more amazing is the fact (also found by Makku) that snakes on loss from 9.3% to 24.4% of initial body weight continued to grow in length (especially increased size of the head – just like those snakes).
Day 168 to study rattlesnakes showed a record decline in the intensity of metabolism. He was only 28 per cent. Snakes reduced the metabolism to the bar in 55%. At the same time, the pythons, the maximum decrease in the intensity Continue reading
How much do we know about Sea serpents?
And that not having very many species and subspecies. They live in the tropics and subtropics, two oceans, the Indian Pacific, from Japan to the North,to Tasmania and New Zealand in the South, from Africa,California and Peru in the East.In the Atlantic there is not one species of sea snakes.Their habitat is rocky coasts of Islands, algae and sea grass.
Sometimes there are hundreds of thousands. They are woven with tangles and prefer to lie on the bottom. Some species of snakes feel comfortable as in seawater and in freshwater,in rivers so a lot of them.On the rivers they rise to the top for hundreds of kilometers, but then still down towards the sea,the sea is the source of their food.
In food they use smaller fish and various inhabitants of the deep sea. Some snakes are able to swallow food bigger than the weight of the snake several times.Only one sea snake that has the exotic name Bonito, lives apart for many hundreds of kilometers from the coast. She hunts only when on the sea surface calm, the fish rises to the top and at this point, palamida begins the hunt.
The venom of this Continue reading
Why are people scared of snakes? Why is it so contemptuously call them reptiles, blaming in all sins possible – from the first, inherited from eve and Adam? It’s not only in pathological mobility, visual “slipperiness” and a cold glance, which cause many instinctive disgust. The fact that some of these reptiles to humans are a real threat. Perhaps the fear of the snake – an echo of the genetic memory of those times, when there were no vaccines and medications, so almost every bite of poisonous snakes was deadly for the victim.
To be honest, there’s not that snake would dare attack the person itself – usually they attack only in self-defense. Although there are a particularly aggressive individuals who don’t need any special occasion to show your teeth ” in the full sense of the word. But the anger – is one thing, and the degree of toxicity – more. Today, when there are medications help the bitten people, some “bastards” ceased to be so dangerous, though the joy of a close acquaintance with them is ever going to do. But what kind of snake is anyway to bypass the tenth road, if you do not want to prematurely part with life?
It is widely known that not one snake on land in its ability to kill cannot be compared with the inhabitants of the ocean. The so-called sea serpent, which is often compared to the Cobra, more poisonous than Continue reading
